Large dogs always attract attention. Often large fluffy animals look like toys, but do not forget that wool is a protection against getting wet and hypothermia. Large dogs are those whose height at the withers exceeds sixty centimeters, and whose weight is more than forty-five kilograms. This group includes a large number of dogs. In this group, dogs are divided into:

Large dogs: breeds and their characteristics

The most popular and brightest representatives of this group are East European and German Shepherds, as well as Rottweilers and Giant Schnauzers.

East European Shepherds are very loyal, brave and strong. Pets are not massive, but have a large skeleton. Well-developed muscles are visible from under the thick and beautiful coat. Males are stronger and larger than females. Dogs have a massive head and an elongated muzzle. Strong jaws have a scissor bite. This breed has large, intelligent, brown eyes and medium-sized, erect, high-set ears. This breed is derived from German Shepherds.

A very prominent representative of large breeds is Samoed-kachevnik. This is an ancient, native Russian, northern breed. The livestock of this breed was practically lost, the breed was saved only thanks to foreign enthusiasts in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

In some areas of the Far North of our country, you can still meet Aboriginal dogs of the Samoyed breed. There are very few of them and the purebredness of these animals is questionable. Favorites are used for the protection of deer, as well as for bear and walrus hunting. The scary name of the breed has nothing to do with something creepy.

Characteristics of Samoyeds:

• Calm and independent character.
• Animals are very loyal and affectionate.
• The hunter’s instinct is pronounced.
• Representatives of this breed are very curious, quick-witted and active.
• They love children very much, females are more suitable for families with small children, and males get along better with teenagers.

White Samoyed puppies resemble snow-white fluffy teddy bear. When an individual becomes an adult, it looks like a mixture of a polar fox and a white wolf. These animals have a sly look and slightly slanted eyes. Pets have a thick fluffy undercoat, while the outer coat is tougher. A peculiar woolen collar appears on the neck, and on the hips the wool grows in the form of panties. The Samoyed has a magnificent fluffy tail. Usually the height of the dog does not exceed fifty-seven centimeters, and they weigh an average of twenty-three to twenty-seven kilograms.

Samoyeds are very beautiful and harmoniously built, have strong bones, and their body is muscular and slightly elongated. These dogs have a wedge-shaped head, a wide forehead and small, high-set triangular ears. The breed is distinguished by a deep chest, a wide and strong loin. The tail is long, carried over the back and covered with very fluffy hair.

Giant dogs: description and characteristics of breeds

Giants are called upon to protect their masters and their families, they have a menacing look and strong character.

The most common giant dog breeds are:

• Dogas. They were bred to hunt large game (mainly peccaries and cougars). These animals are able to hunt for a long time, and after that they have enough strength to fight with prey. Also, this breed is used as a service dog, they are excellent bodyguards and guards. All over the world, this is one of the best breeds for guard and protective service. If properly trained, pets will become ideal guides and the best helpers for people with disabilities. In show business in recent years, a fashion for Great Danes has appeared. In this regard, a new direction for their breeding has been outlined, however, new dogs do not have their former working qualities, and they have become heavier in design. There is a risk that the degradation of the breed will occur in the same way as with many hunting dogs. Despite the fact that the Great Danes have a formidable appearance, they have never been used as fighting representatives, because they are designed specifically for hunting and they have a good character. Most Great Danes live in Argentina where they serve as companions.
• wolfhounds – These are representatives of large breeds, which are bred for protection from wolves and hunting for them. These include: Alabai, Russian Greyhounds, Caucasian Shepherd Dogs, Armenian Wolfhounds (Taigans), South Russian Shepherd Dogs, Kazakh Greyhounds (Tazy).
• Tibeto mastifai. The breed is very serious, mastiffs have very strong jaws and a powerful grip. Mastiffs are fierce towards enemies, and distrustful towards strangers. This breed was bred in the highlands. Mastiffs are very similar to lions and have a fluffy coat and a magnificent mane collar on the neck and head.

Pros and cons of big dogs

• While the puppy is growing, it requires a lot of financial and time costs. This also applies to training, and nutrition, and the damage that the puppy brings to the house.

• When living in the city, you need to think in advance about the places where the dog will walk. You should not buy a large dog if the owner is not ready to walk with it for a long time.
• If dogs are not educated and made clear who is the boss in the house, but this should be done in adolescence, then soon they will build their owners themselves. For this reason, many give their dogs to shelters because they cannot handle them.
• Problems arise during vacation. Large dogs are much harder to attach somewhere for the duration of the absence of the owners than small harmless pets. Not every professional is ready to be with a big dog for several days or weeks, and even ordinary people or, for example, relatives, even more so. Someone is afraid of aggression, although in vain, someone cannot devote the necessary amount of time for walks, someone has children, and a huge dog still looks quite intimidating.
• Walking with large dogs is necessary for a long time in any weather.

Large dogs are united not only by size: they are disciplined and calm, persistent psyche and great affection for their owners. Often naturalists and writers note the good nature of giant dogs. There is no denying the fact that most of these dogs are very slobbery. Everyone who at least once in his life felt the manifestation of dog love, forever remembered the kisses of affectionate giant dogs, after which a large amount of saliva remains.

It’s very sad that big dogs live a maximum of twelve years and that is rare. For such a short period of life, dogs change the worldview of the owner and become an integral part of the whole family, companions and helpers.
